Automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) is a system that can automatically store and retrieve materials without direct manual processing. This definition covers an extremely wide variety of systems of varying complexity and size. Automated warehouses are managed and controlled by electronic computers, and realize sending and receiving operations without manual handling operations. Some automated warehouses can be directly connected to other production systems.

According to the height of the three-dimensional warehouse, the shelves can be divided into low-level three-dimensional warehouses, middle-level three-dimensional warehouses and high-level three-dimensional warehouses.

.Low-rise three-dimensional warehouse: The height of the low-rise three-dimensional warehouse is below 5m. It is mainly rebuilt on the basis of the original old warehouse, and it is a means to improve the technical level of the original warehouse.

.Middle-level three-dimensional warehouse: The height of the middle-level three-dimensional warehouse is between 5m and 15m. Because the middle-level three-dimensional warehouse has low requirements for buildings and storage machinery and equipment, and the cost is reasonable, it is currently the most widely used warehouse.

High-rise three-dimensional warehouse: The height of high-rise three-dimensional warehouse is more than 15m. Due to its high requirements for construction and storage machinery and equipment, the cost is too high, the installation is difficult, and relatively speaking, there are few applications.
